5 Reasons to Schedule an Engagement Session
Engagement sessions can be a huge part of your wedding planning process. But why should you have one, and why should you book one with the same photographer you booked for your wedding day? I’m going to deep dive into those questions with 5 reasons why you should schedule an engagement session with your wedding photographer.
1. Make you feel comfortable
Having an engagement session with your wedding photographer is hands down the BEST way to know you’ll feel more comfortable on your wedding day. It’s a chance for you and your photographer to get to know each other in person - so it’s not some stranger taking photos of you on your wedding day. MOST people don’t like their picture taken or feel awkward in front of the camera, so taking the time to book a session with your photographer can really help the nerves and have you rocking your wedding day portraits.
I personally love being able to walk around and chat with my couples about what they like to do, their pets, wedding plans and whatever comes up. I want to learn more about them so they feel comfortable with me regardless if I have a camera in hand or not.
2. Perfect time for hair and makeup trial
Engagement sessions are the PERFECT time to get your hair and makeup trial done. You’re really getting two things out of the way, and you’re not wasting that good hair and makeup on a few phone selfies. You can also see how your hair and makeup trial photographs professionally and see if there are any adjustments you want to make for your wedding day.
3. Save the dates/wedding website photos
Make it Facebook official!! Having an engagement session is a great way to announce that you are engaged, on social media, for save the dates and your wedding website. You can also use your engagement photos for decor or a guest book at your wedding, hang them on your walls in your home and put them on your invitations.
4. Understanding how your wedding photographer poses
This ties hand in hand with the first reason. Many photographers pose differently, understanding how your wedding photographer poses (or doesn’t pose) will help you feel comfortable and confident on your wedding day.
For me personally as a photographer, I don’t pose in the traditional sense of the word. I use prompts and suggestions to capture more candid moments that let the chemistry between you shine. It’s also an easier way to get couples more comfortable in front of the camera because posing feels awkward which leads to feeling uncomfortable. I like to make couples laugh and have a good time throughout their whole engagement session.
5. You can have A TON of fun with it
Want to have a picnic or bake a cake together? What about going to the place you got engaged or spending time at home with your pets? Your engagement session is really flexible with what you can do. Express yourself as a couple and just have fun! These photos don’t have to be serious and can be as creative as you want them to be!
