The SMP Guide to Posing Naturally Durring Couples Portraits

Capturing authentic, natural moments in your wedding or engagement photos doesn’t have to feel intimidating. I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and completely in the moment. When you work with me, it’s all about creating an experience where you can relax, have fun, and truly enjoy being together. From the moment we start, I’ll guide you with prompts and direction that make the process feel effortless and enjoyable. You don’t need to worry about being "photogenic" or knowing what to do—I’ll take care of that. Here are my top tips for creating beautiful, genuine images that showcase your unique connection.

1. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

While we’ll take a few classic, “looking-at-the-camera” photos, most of your photos will center on the connection between you two. I’ll guide you with prompts that encourage interaction, like:

  • “Walk hand-in-hand, looking at each other then looking at the camera”

  • “Face each other, hold hands (followed by a few prompts in this pose)”

  • “Whisper something sweet (or silly) in their ear.”

These prompts are designed to spark laughter, smiles, and chemistry that feel authentic. By focusing on your partner instead of the camera, the photos will feel more intimate and real, capturing the emotions and energy that make your relationship unique.

2. Relax and Have Fun

This is your time to celebrate and enjoy each other. I aim to create a lighthearted atmosphere where you can let loose and be yourselves. Whether it’s twirling in a field, sharing a quiet moment, or laughing at an inside joke, the goal is to capture your joy and personality.

I’ll encourage playful moments and natural interactions to help you feel at ease. If you’re nervous, that’s okay! We’ll start with simple poses and build up to more dynamic ones as your confidence grows. By the end, you’ll forget the camera is even there.

3. Trust the Process

For many couples, this is the first professional photo session since senior year, and that’s completely okay! I’ll guide you every step of the way, showing you how to stand, move, or interact. If something feels awkward, we’ll adjust. My job is to make sure you feel at ease and look amazing.

Trusting the process means letting go of perfection and embracing the natural flow of the session. I’ll provide clear directions and gentle guidance to highlight your best angles while keeping the vibe relaxed and enjoyable. Together, we’ll create photos that feel effortless and genuine.

4. Embrace the Little Moments

Some of the best photos happen in between the poses: the way you look at each other, a spontaneous laugh, or the way your hands naturally find each other. Don’t worry about “doing it right”—just focus on being present with your partner, and I’ll take care of the rest.

These candid moments often hold the most emotion and authenticity. Whether it’s a soft glance, an unexpected giggle, or the way your partner brushes a strand of hair from your face, these details tell your story beautifully. By embracing the little moments, we’ll create images that feel timeless and personal.

Taking photos together should feel fun, easy, and reflective of your love story. My approach is all about creating a relaxed environment where your connection shines. Whether it’s a quiet moment or a burst of laughter, these photos will capture the real you—together.
