Summer Wedding at Village Suites Bay Harbor
There is something special about a Northern Michigan summer. The soft breeze off the water, the long golden evenings, and the relaxed, coastal feel make it one of the most beautiful places to host a destination wedding. Molly and Nate knew they wanted a summer celebration in a location that felt elegant, inviting, and comfortable for their traveling guests. When they discovered Village Suites Bay Harbor, everything aligned. The lakeside setting offered the outdoor ceremony space they hoped for, along with a tented reception area and easy accommodations for friends and family coming in from out of state.
Summer in Northern Michigan brings warm days without the intense heat found farther south, which made it the perfect backdrop for a weekend getaway wedding. With the venue booked, lodging secured, and save the dates sent nearly a year in advance, the two created an experience that felt like a vacation for everyone who joined them.
Molly and Nate’s story began when Molly was working as a school counseling intern at the same school where Nate taught. She spent the year helping his fifth graders prepare for middle school, and although they crossed paths often, the timing was not quite right. More than a year later, Nate sent Molly a message on Instagram, and the spark finally had its chance. Their first date was breakfast at a local favorite, Good Morning Mama's, which now sits within walking distance of their home. They connected instantly, and Molly still laughs thinking about how Nate had her smiling the entire time. That easy, joyful connection carried into every part of their relationship.
When it came to planning their wedding, choosing Northern Michigan felt like the perfect reflection of who they are as a couple. Calm, intentional, warm, and focused on what truly matters. On their wedding day, the sky was clear and bright as they exchanged vows outdoors near the water. Before the ceremony, they chose to share private vows during their first look. It created a quiet moment for them to breathe, connect, and express everything they were feeling without an audience. Later, during the ceremony, they exchanged traditional vows in front of the people who mean the most to them.
The style of the day blended coastal inspiration with relaxed elegance. The color palette and decor echoed the natural tones of the lake and shoreline. Molly even hand painted their save the dates, a thoughtful personal touch that shaped the color story for the rest of the wedding. The entire ceremony felt warm and intentional, a reflection of their story and the people who have supported them along the way.
As guests moved into cocktail hour, the celebration shifted into a lively, summer atmosphere. What started as a clear day eventually took a dramatic turn when the sky opened up with unexpected rain halfway through the evening. Instead of dampening the energy, the rain became one of the most memorable parts of the day. Everyone gathered under the tent a little earlier than planned, laughing and embracing the spontaneity. The change in weather brought everyone closer together, and it set the tone for a reception filled with warmth, joy, and nonstop dancing.
Under the tent, the reception design echoed the couple’s love for simple, meaningful details. Their focus was not on extravagance, but on creating a genuine celebration with good food, drinks, and music. The dance floor stayed full all night. The rain never slowed anything down. If anything, it added its own magic.
It was an honor to photograph Molly and Nate’s wedding and to see their story celebrated so beautifully. Their day was also published in Destination I Do, and you can view the feature here: Northern Michigan Lakeside Destination Wedding
